Question - How do I find the top blogs in my field

Answer - It took us a while to find them, but here are some sites that point you towards top bloggers

Key points

Blogging is a term which originated in ‘web logging’ – recording daily events on the web.

Over recent years the phenomenon has exploded and some of its proponents have massive followings so it has become, in effect, an alternative PR channel with the in-built endorsement or vilification of the blogger.

When the Disney Corporation launched its PR campaign for the Harry Potter theme park, it told just seven people – the seven most powerful bloggers in the world, supposedly. The claim is that within three days 350 million people had received the news.

In more detail ….

There is actually not a lot to say about blogging except that it is potentially alternative PR or even advertorial. If you can persuade a top blogger interested in the sort of thing you do to endorse you, this can be big business.

Famously, in the UK, Delia Smith, a top cookery journalist, recommended a specific brand of omelette pan which had historically sold a few thousand units a year for many years. Subsequent to her recommendation during her TV cookery programme, orders flew in from the supermarkets for hundreds of thousands of units. This not a blogging story as such, but the principle is the same. There are people out there who command huge credibility and an ever bigger audience. It’s the best publicity you can get, especially as most bloggers do not even attempt unbiased reporting – they are mostly read because they are entertainingly biased and provocative.

In the marketing world, Guy Kawasaki is constantly mentioned as a guru’s guru in the blogging world. If you are looking for a list of the most popular marketing blogging sites, Adage has its Power 150 here.

More broadly, here are several sites that will point you towards the top blogs in your field:

If you want to explore the blogosphere in more detail, Daily Blog Tips points you towards the top meta-blog sites, i.e. the sites that talk about blogging.

And if you want to earn your living as a freelance blogger, ProBlogger has some suggestions for you because many syndicated blog sites will pay you (not much usually) to submit a blog.

Imagine achieving so much more for so much less.
